ADWD Contest 2011

Unless some miracle should happen, we won't see A Dance with Dragons in 2010. That means last year's contest has ended without a winner (indeed, we're all losers in this game). Per the rules, we throw out the previous entries and start the contest anew for 2011. The game is simple: the person who guesses the exact date when ADWD is released (or comes closest) wins a special prize. Everyone is eligible to enter. Read on for complete rules and details on how to enter.

The deadline for this contest is January 8, 2011, 3:01 AM ET. If you are reading this post after that date and time, you're out of luck.

The prize for this contest will be determined within a month of A Dance with Dragons's release. The prize will not exceed $25 in value. If the winning entry comes from a person outside the United States, the prize will be a gift certificate to an online retailer.

To enter, send an email to adwd2011 [-at-] towerofthehand [-dot-] com with the subject "ADWD Contest". In your email, be sure to include:

1) The date you think A Dance with Dragons will be released officially in stores in the United States. The date must be in the year 2011. You may not think that ADWD will be released this year, but play along anyway. And to avoid any confusion, please spell out the month name (e.g. say "January 4, 2011", not "01/04/11").

2) The number of chapters you think will be in A Dance with Dragons, including any prologue or epilogue. If necessary, this will be used as the first tie-breaker. For comparison's sake, AGOT had 73 chapters, ACOK 70, ASOS 82, and AFFC 46.

3) The number of pages you think will be in the first edition U.S. hardcover edition of A Dance with Dragons. Your guess should include all numbered pages (from the first page of the prologue to the last page of the appendices). If necessary, this will be used as the second tie-breaker.

That's it! You should receive a confirmation email within a few hours of sending your entry. If you do not, please resubmit your entry or contact us. Remember, the deadline for this contest is Saturday, January 8, 2011, 3:01 AM ET.

Good luck!

Complete* Contest Rules

Limit one entry per person. If multiple entries from the same email address are received, only the most recent entry will be considered.

Only entries received before the contest deadline will be considered.

It's possible that another country will release ADWD first, but for the purposes of this contest, only the release date, number of chapters, and number of pages of the first edition U.S. hardcover will be used to determine a winner.

If no one guesses the exact date, then the closest date will be awarded the prize. By "closest date," we mean closest in either direction. For the purposes of this contest, there is no "closest without going over." Let's say ADWD is released January 20. You guessed January 23, which is a difference of three days. But someone else submitted January 18, which is a difference of two days and is the closer guess.

Tie-breaker rules: If two or more entrants submit the same winning date, the winner will be the entrant who comes closest to guessing the number of chapters in ADWD. If another tie-breaker is required, the winner will be the entrant who comes closest to guessing the number of pages in ADWD. If there's still a tie, then the winner will be chosen randomly from the remaining entrants.

The prize will not be awarded until ADWD is officially released. George R. R. Martin may announce a 2011 release date, only to see that date get pushed back. If that should happen, the actual release date will be used to determine a winner.

If ADWD is not released in 2011, then all entries of this contest will be thrown out and the contest will start anew in January 2012.

If George R. R. Martin announces a 2012 release date for ADWD during this calendar year (i.e. before we can start a new contest), then the tie-breakers of this contest will be used to determine a winner.

If George R. R. Martin announces a release date for ADWD while we are accepting entries for this contest (that is, between now and January 8, 2011), then tie-breakers will be used to determine a winner. We will continue to accept entries until this contest's deadline.

This contest is being held without the knowledge or consent of George R. R. Martin. If he or his publishers ask us to stop this activity, we will comply. All entrants will be notified of any such actions.

By entering this contest, entrants agree to all guidelines and rules listed here at the time of entry. Entries that do not comply to any guideline will be disqualified without notification.

* We reserve the right to changes rules as needed. Participants will be notified of any and all changes.
