According to the NY Post, George R. R. Martin tried "desperately" to talk HBO out of making Game of Thrones, for fear of a flop. "It's too big. It's too complicated. It's too expensive," GRRM reasoned in the preface of Inside HBO's Game of Thrones, a new official companion book written by Bryan Cogman. The book is available at bookstores now (also at the HBO StoreImage).

Update: Adam Whitehead comments that GRRM says in the book that he was reluctant to adapt ASOIAF as a typical Hollywood project, not an HBO TV show; the NY Post article may have misinterpreted this, and this post has been revised to clarify that.
