In the 1980s, George R. R. Martin was working in Hollywood as a television screenwriter, contributing scripts to the first Twilight Zone revival and producing the Beauty and the Beast TV show. GRRM recently recounted the story of how he also interviewed for a job on Star Trek: The Next Generation, early in that show's run. Suffice it to say, GRRM did not get that gig, as he and the producer seemed to have differing views on what Star Trek should be and what GRRM could offer it. (Obviously this was before GRRM found major success with A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones, but it was also after he was an established writer, with multiple Hugo and Nebula awards to boot.) We can only imagine the parallel universe in which GRRM helped shape the Star Trek franchise for the next three decades while the story of Westeros never got written.

Tonight, Star Trek: Discovery debuts on CBS. Paying subscribers will find subsequent episodes on CBS All Access. Regardless of the delivery method, Star Trek belongs on the small screen. As fun and as popular as J.J. Abrams' movies can be, only television affords Star Trek the time and space it needs to tell the stories it tells best. I don't know if Discovery will live up to its legacy. I don't know if the show can overcome its tumultuous production issues and atypical premise. But I'll be watching, hoping Burnham, Georgiou, and Lorca will be worthy successors to (or predecessors of?) Captains Kirk and Picard, among many other fine Starfleet officers.

Who else will be tuning into Discovery tonight? Are you willing to spring for yet another streaming service? What's your favorite Star Trek series and who are your top five favorite characters?
