Volunteers wanted for Season 8's Third Eye

Exactly one week from now, the final season of Game of Thrones begins. If you intend to watch every new episode of Game of Thrones as it airs, feel free to update your scope to Season 8 now. Otherwise, leave it at Season 7 (or lower), and you won't see spoilers from the upcoming season.

Tower of the Hand plans to cover the final season as we have all seasons of Game of Thrones, and that includes bringing back the "Third Eye" reviews for one more round. A different member of the community will lead a new discussion about the most recent episode. That person is welcome to briefly recap the episode, offer his or her take on it (or to counter a review seen here or elsewhere), and most importantly predict what will happen in the episodes to come. The predictions can be based on small clues left behind by the episode, they can be bold assertions without actual evidence, or they can be forward-looking questions for the community to debate.

If you're interested in leading a Third Eye discussion this season, please contact us. Be sure to include an email address where we can reach you. You may also list any dates this year that you would rather avoid (see the schedule below); otherwise, volunteers will be assigned a random episode. New and previous contributors to Tower of the Hand are invited to volunteer, though with only six episodes left, we may prioritize first time participants.

Volunteers wanted for Group Re-watch Project. With the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones definitively set to return in April 2019, it's time to get to work on our next project: Tower of the Hand's Game of Thrones Group Re-watch. Much like we did in our Group Re-read of A Song of Ice and Fire, we're seeking volunteers from our community to lead a weekly discussion of two episodes, beginning with Season 1.

For this project, we'd like to explore how the show is different now than from episodes of years past. Some questions group leaders might consider for their analyses:

  1. What were the most memorable scenes from the episodes? Do these scenes remain as iconic or impactful now as they did when they first aired?
  2. Are there any characters from the episodes that you miss now, or perhaps a storyline that in retrospect seems like a missed opportunity?
  3. Does the show still feel the same in terms of writing or directorial style? Has it noticeably improved from a production standpoint?

It might also be helpful to start your analysis with a short summary of the assigned episodes, say two or three paragraphs. You are invited to include whatever additional features you like, e.g. reviews of the episodes, favorite quotes, or discussion questions. All in all, we expect posts to be between 1200 and 2000 words.

If you're interested in participating in our Game of Thrones Group Re-watch, please contact us. Be sure to include an email address where we can reach you. Tell us which seasons you would prefer to recap; we'll do our best to assign you episodes from your requested seasons. Our current plan is to publish one or two Re-watch posts every week from December until April. (As such, volunteers for Season 1 episodes may have an earlier deadline.) Thanks!

What Has Died in Season 7. It's been a year in the making, but Tower of the Hand is pleased to launch What Is Dead May Never Die, a new series of profiles that looks at those who have died in Game of Thrones the TV show, yet still live in A Song of Ice and Fire's books. If you have submitted a character profile to us, you should by now know either when your profile is being posted on TotH, or when your next draft is due. If you didn't receive that info, please email me or contact us.

Of course, now that Season 7 has aired, we have several notable names that we can add to this feature, and we're seeking volunteers to write about them, too. For the sake of convenience, we've consolidated a few minor characters who were killed at roughly the same time on the show.

  1. Olenna Tyrell
  2. Petyr Baelish
  3. Randyll & Dickon Tarly
  4. Ellaria & the Sand Snakes
  5. Viserion

There are also a few characters from previous seasons that we're hoping someone here might be able to profile for us:

  1. Hizdahr zo Loraq
  2. Hodor
  3. Lancel Lannister
  4. Loras Tyrell
  5. Ramsay Bolton

If you're interested in writing about any one of the characters listed above, please contact us. Let us know your preferred choice and perhaps a backup character or two, and we'll send out more details about this exercise to you then. We will prioritize first time contributors, but everyone is invited to volunteer. Thanks!

TotH to transition to secure logins this fall. Beginning this fall, the Tower of the Hand website will fully adopt the HTTP secure protocol, so that your logins and other submissions will be properly encrypted. What exactly does this mean for you? Practically speaking, not much. You may continue to visit and use Tower of the Hand as you normally do. Just be aware that at some point in the near future, Tower of the Hand's web pages will automatically redirect to their "https" equivalents. When that happens, you may be prompted to log in again (so be sure you know your password or at the very least confirm your email address in your account settings). Members who log in to Tower of the Hand via Facebook and Twitter are already being redirected to the more secure version of this site. Other members may force the transition to happen immediately by visiting and/or updating their bookmarks to this address: https://towerofthehand.com.

If you have concerns about this or you encounter any problems, don't hesitate to contact us.

Seeking volunteers for Season 7's Third Eye. Last season we introduced a new feature we called our "Third Eye," and we hope to continue it this year. Each week, a different member of the community will lead a new discussion about the most recent Game of Thrones episode. That person is welcome to briefly recap the episode, offer his or her take on it (or to counter a review seen on Tower of the Hand or elsewhere), and most importantly predict what will happen in the episodes to come. The predictions can be based on small clues left behind by the episode, they can be bold assertions without actual evidence, or they can be forward-looking questions for the community to debate.

If you're interested in leading a Third Eye discussion this season, please contact us. Be sure to include an email address where we can reach you. You may also list any dates this summer that you would rather avoid; otherwise, volunteers will be assigned a random episode. New and previous contributors to Tower of the Hand are invited to participate, though with only seven episodes this season, we may prioritize first time participants.

One other scheduling note: we will begin posting the "What's Dead May Never Die" essays in September. Contributors to that series should expect a more detailed email from me on that shortly.

Update: We presently have enough volunteers for all of this season's Third Eye reviews. Many thanks to everyone who offered to write a guest review for us this year!

Requesting volunteers: What Is Dead May Never Die. The final two characters who topped our Loathed Characters countdown will finally be revealed next week, and we'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved, from our great profilers to our excellent peer reviewers. We would also like to send up a call for volunteers for our next collaborative project: What Is Dead May Never Die.

As Game of Thrones the TV show has caught up to and surpassed the novels on which it was originally based, we've witnessed a number of characters who have been killed off who still live in the books. In What Is Dead May Never Die, writers will be tasked with reviewing one of those would-be dead characters. They'll summarize how a character died in Game of Thrones and what that character's current status is, as of A Dance with Dragons. Then profilers will be asked to predict if the character is destined for the same fate in the books that he/she met in the TV show. If not, the profilers are invited to speculate on their character's chances for survival and where they'd personally like to see the character in the end.

These aren't meant to be profiles in the same way that we covered characters in our Top and Loathed series. Instead, we're hoping this to be far more speculative and future focused. If you're interested in participating, please contact us and identify three dead characters from recent seasons of the TV show that you'd like to write about; we can't promise you'll get your top pick but we'll try to be fair with the assignments. New and previous contributors are all welcome. Thanks, and valar morghulis!

Update: The first batch of assignments are being sent out now. If you volunteered but don't hear from me by Tuesday morning, please contact us. There are still a few characters left unclaimed if you're still interested in volunteering; again, please contact us and we'll send you a list of available characters to choose from.
