TotH to transition to secure logins this fall. Beginning this fall, the Tower of the Hand website will fully adopt the HTTP secure protocol, so that your logins and other submissions will be properly encrypted. What exactly does this mean for you? Practically speaking, not much. You may continue to visit and use Tower of the Hand as you normally do. Just be aware that at some point in the near future, Tower of the Hand's web pages will automatically redirect to their "https" equivalents. When that happens, you may be prompted to log in again (so be sure you know your password or at the very least confirm your email address in your account settings). Members who log in to Tower of the Hand via Facebook and Twitter are already being redirected to the more secure version of this site. Other members may force the transition to happen immediately by visiting and/or updating their bookmarks to this address:

If you have concerns about this or you encounter any problems, don't hesitate to contact us.

The New Season 6 Spoiler Policy. As we are about to enter the sixth Game of Thrones season when there is not yet an equivalent sixth A Song of Ice and Fire book, we thought it a good time to inform everyone of the newest spoiler policy here at Tower of the Hand. For a long time, we have defined A Dance with Dragons as the most up-to-date installment of the story, and our scope system attempted to hide the book's details from more casual viewers of the show accordingly. Game of Thrones Season 6 promises to go beyond the scope of the published books, so we will now consider Season 6 to be the most current part of the story, and all future articles will now be edited to hide details from book readers who do not (or will not) watch the show. Furthermore, while there are probably parts of ADWD that will make their way into future episodes of Game of Thrones, our Season 6 articles will assume that you've either read ADWD or that you no longer mind discussion of the book.

If you intend to watch every new episode of Game of Thrones as it airs, feel free to update your scope to Season 6. Otherwise, leave it at Season 5 (or lower), and you won't see spoilers from the upcoming season.

One last note, Tower of the Hand will continue to use the books as the primary reference for our encyclopedia. We have no plans to update the encyclopedia with events from the show. This is not because we want to declare one canon more legitimate than the other; it's just simply easier for us to handle the book material separate from the show, and the books have always been our focus. Any questions or concerns with this or anything else, feel free to contact us.

Update on Character Countdowns. For a number of boring reasons, we've fallen rather behind on publishing profiles, essays, and other fun activities here at Tower of the Hand. But rather than play catch up, we've decided simply to reset the schedule and plan a new path forward. Here's what to expect in 2016 (though we reserve the right to throw out the schedule, should The Winds of Winter get a release date).

First, we still have the ten remaining Historical Characters to publish, and we'll resume that countdown in January 2016. If you've already submitted your profile to us, the goal is to have it edited and formatted by the end of 2015. If you haven't yet submitted your profile - and, yes, there is still a handful of outstanding profiles, so you're not alone - please do so as soon as you can.

After we conclude the Historical Characters, we'll move on to the much-anticipated Loathed Characters list. If you volunteered to write a profile for that series, you should have received a list of characters from which to choose, with a first draft deadline of early February. Right now we have enough writers to profile the 25 most despised characters, but we'd like to expand that to 30; the bigger list would include some folks that we don't talk about much. Please contact us if you're interested in writing.

Additionally, we're putting out a call for volunteer editors. These editors would look over the early drafts of other writers (beginning with the Loathed profilers), with the responsibility of providing feedback, suggestions, and general proof corrections. It's like peer review, except in a much more timely fashion than I've been able to manage by myself. Please contact us if you're interested in editing.

As always, thanks for everyone's contributions and patience!

Ten Years of the Tower Giveaway Day 1. This week, Tower of the Hand celebrates its tenth name day. My, how time flies. To mark the occasion, we're giving out some swag! Most of these are items that we've had the privilege of receiving for review purposes. As such, they're not 100% new, but they are still in near-perfect condition.

Today's prize is the Game of Thrones Season 1 Blu-ray/DVD set (this is in the original packaging, not the new Steelbook set). To enter, simply leave a comment on this post by Wednesday, November 11, 2015, 11:59 PM ET. The winner will be drawn at random and contacted next week. Good luck!

Thanks again to everyone for visiting Tower of the Hand. If you'd like to support us further, please consider buying the ebook we released earlier this year, if you haven't already. A Hymn for Spring contains 11 original essays from Tower of the Hand's most prolific writers. We remain greatly appreciative of everyone's support and contributions over the years, and we look forward to many more years discussing the final two books of A Song of Ice and Fire and the upcoming seasons of Game of Thrones.

Volunteers requested for upcoming profiles. Next week, Tower of the Hand will start unveiling the most influential characters from the history of A Song of Ice and Fire, as voted by our members. But first, we need to find a new volunteer to profile one last character from that list. The writer will need to submit between 600 and 2000 words by September 21. Familiarity with the Dunk and Egg tales is highly recommended. If you're willing and able, please contact us and we'll send you more details.

On a less urgent matter, we're also inviting you to contact us if you're interested in profiling one of the less savory characters from the books, as determined by our recent "Loathed Characters" survey. We expect these profiles to be between 1000 and 2000 words, and the deadline won't be until the end of the year, so there'll be plenty of time to conjure up some hateful words about ASOIAF's greatest monsters. New volunteers are absolutely welcome!

Switch between desktop and mobile view. Just to follow up on the last post, the server switch is now mostly complete. Some pages still need to be migrated, so don't be surprised if you encounter a 404 message or two in the next few days. While we sort that out, rest assured that most of the core functions should work as expected. Feel free to comment on posts, register and log in, search our encyclopedia, take trivia quizzes, etc. as though nothing has changed.

You may, however, notice one change that's come with the new server. Tower of the Hand will now automatically detect whether you're visiting from a mobile device and give you a slimmed down version of the site. You can easily switch views if you prefer the desktop version (or vice versa). This setting will be remembered per device. Any questions or problems, just let us know.

Scheduled downtime tonight, May 16. Tower of the Hand will be going dark later this evening to perform some much-needed server upgrades. During this time, visitors will not be able to post comments or create new accounts, and many pages will not be viewable. The downtime is expected to last several hours, but -- assuming everything goes well -- we'll be up and running again by morning.

Sorry about the inconvenience!

TWOW Due Date Contest 2015

You may not think that The Winds of Winter will be published in 2015 (you can predict a different year here). But let's assume for a moment that TWOW will somehow land on bookshelves in 2015. Would you care to guess the exact due date? As we did when A Dance with Dragons finally arrived, we will award the closest guess with a special prize!

Everyone is eligible to enter, but the deadline for this contest is January 10, 2015, 3:01 AM ET. If you are reading this post after that date and time, you're out of luck. Read on for complete rules and details on how to enter.
