The War of the Five Kings began because of disputes over the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Following Robert Baratheon's death in 298, Robert's son Joffrey assumed the throne. Hand of the King Eddard Stark believed Stannis Baratheon to be the lawful king, but Joffrey named both traitors to the crown. Robb Stark raised the Stark banners in revolt. Renly Baratheon and Balon Greyjoy each raised an army, but only in support of their own claims to the Iron Throne.
